La.te yesterday afternoou James Cotton and Peter Lorey, ho uj.J driven from this city to Terry on a business tri'P were viciiins of a fright fui runaway, while thuir return. At the juncture of the roads in the vicinity of the Portland crossing the team became frightened and started on a mad dash down the gulch. Cottou and Ixxiey were thrown lrom the vehicle, and badly bruised up. Mr. Cotton was thrown to the ground with such violence that for some time it was thought tuat he would not recover.

As soon a-s Air. Lorey, wuo wj not as badly injured as his ass'C'ate came to himself, he founr Mr. Cotton lying on the road side. The condition in which Mr. Cotton was found was such that it became necessary to remove him to the Terry hospital.

Mr. Lorey was successful in finding a passing vehicle owned by Albert Rose, who assisted in taking Mr. Cotton to the Terry institution, where his injuries were, dressed. II was impossible to determine the extent of his injury last night, but aside from some bad bruises it is not thought that they will result fatally. Mr.

Lorey after seeing his companion in good hands, returned to his home and aside from a gash in his forehead and a severe shaking up, was not otherwise injured. He showed a great amount of presence of mind, and after having his injury dressed, he was feeling quite himself. The team was caught alter they had run for over a mile, and neither of the horses were badly Injured, but the Hggy was entirely demolished before the frightened horses were halted. ANOTHER BRUTE. The only 6rst-class boarding-and rooming house in the city.

Yesterday Fred Estlick wps brought in from the Cheyenne river, suffering with a serious gun shot wound, alleged to have been inflicted by his employer. Mr. Howard. He is confined to St. Josepr's hospital, and Dr.

P. J. Waldron of Rapid City is attending him. The shooting is said to have besn in self defense. Estlick is sail to hate been in Mr.

Howard's employ for some time, and his wife has been engaged about the Howard home. Monday while intoxicated. Eslick is said to have mistreated his wife and that Mr. Howard interfered to spare her further vil treatment. Estlick knocked Howard down, Howard started for -Ms house, followel by Estlick.

Harry Leach, one of the employes of the Homestake shops met with a painful, as well as a costly mishap. He was working at one of the large trip hammers cutting bolts, which are to be used in the timber work hi the mines, when he got bis hand caught in the liamrax severing three Angers on his right hand. As soon as the member haJ been taken from the machine was taken to the hospital, where an examination showed that it was uccessary to amputate the injured member. The injury occurred during the afternoon and as a result of the accident, Mr. Leach will be oc.vpelled to lay off for several weeks.
